Starting a networking career without an IT background can make certification selection difficult. Several networking exams cover similar subjects, but their difficulty levels and technical expectations vary considerably.
Cisco Certified Support Technician (CCST) Networking is one option for complete beginners. Its 100-150 exam covers basic networking concepts, IP addressing, network infrastructure, troubleshooting, and security fundamentals. Candidates learn how routers, switches, wireless networks, and common communication protocols operate.
CompTIA Network+ N10-009 offers a broader vendor-neutral approach. It covers network implementation, operations, security, troubleshooting, and technologies commonly encountered in business environments.
Cisco CCNA 200-301 is another possibility, although it requires deeper knowledge of routing, switching, network access, and device configuration.
Before choosing an exam, beginners should consider their existing technical knowledge and career interests. Someone pursuing general IT support may benefit from Network+, while a person interested in Cisco networking infrastructure might consider CCST before advancing to CCNA.
Preparation resources also deserve attention. Cert Mage is one option candidates may encounter when researching networking practice questions, but checking alignment with official exam objectives is important.
Learning how DHCP assigns addresses, how DNS resolves domain names, and how devices communicate across networks provides a practical foundation.
The most suitable first certification is usually the one that matches a candidate's current experience and helps develop skills relevant to their intended entry-level role.
